Greenwoman Magazine was founded on three passions: an enthusiasm for gardening, a deep love for garden writing, and a desire to do something that would turn people on to both.

The first book in the garden writing genre that I read, about two decades ago, was American Garden Writing, edited by Bonnie Marranca. A vast and exciting green world opened up for me through the words of Thomas Jefferson, Alice Morse Earle, J. I. Rodale, Wendell Berry, Allen Lacy, Elizabeth Lawrence and many others. I was hooked, fascinated, enthralled.

I learned that the genre of garden writing was one that combined Nature with Culture: the beauty, magic and science of gardening life combined with history, art, politics, fashion, ecology --everything!

It made me want to get my hands into the soil, to create my own garden.

Greenwoman Magazine reflects everything that excites and interests me about garden writing. It’s devoted to gardening thought in all its forms--fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, commentary, biography, art and comics. It’s the only magazine where you will find an in-depth article on the state of world seed ownership juxtaposed with a poem likening hot romance to the Scoville Heat Scale of chili peppers, and an interview with a novelist who not only gardens but uses the garden as a powerful theme in her fiction.

We have four columnists in each issue writing about: slow living, our gardens' animal life (mostly insect), the amazing world of plant sexuality, and creating your own natural home and beauty products.
